Why Your Maritime Website Is Invisible to AI Search Tools
When a shipowner asks ChatGPT to recommend a reputable marine surveyor in the Mediterranean, what does it say? When a charter broker searches Perplexity for superyacht management companies, whose name comes up?
If the answer is not yours, you have an AI visibility problem.
What Is AI Search?
AI search tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — do not work the way Google did in 2010. They do not return a list of ten blue links. They synthesise information from thousands of sources and return a single, confident answer.
To appear in that answer, your website needs to be readable by AI systems. Not just indexed by them — understood by them.
The Five Signals AI Tools Look For
1. Structured data (Schema.org)
Schema.org markup tells AI tools exactly what your business does, who you serve, and where you operate. Without it, AI systems have to guess — and they often guess wrong or not at all.
2. Maritime topical relevance
Your content needs to use the vocabulary of your sector. Vessel types, certification bodies, flag states, operational regions. If you describe yourself as “a consultant” without maritime context, AI tools cannot place you in the maritime niche.
3. FAQ and question-format content
AI search is fundamentally answer-based. Sites that answer specific questions perform far better than sites that only describe services. A page titled “What is a marine warranty surveyor?” is more AI-readable than a page titled “Our Services”.
4. Technical accessibility
AI crawlers need clean access. An XML sitemap, a correctly configured robots.txt, fast load times, and no JavaScript-blocked content are the basics. Many maritime websites fail all four.
5. Authority signals
Links from sector publications, mentions on LinkedIn, consistent NAP (name, address, phone) data across directories. AI tools cross-reference sources. The more consistently your name appears across reputable maritime sources, the more authoritative you look.
How to Find Out Where You Stand
The fastest way to assess your AI visibility is to run a structured audit against all five categories. Our free Marine AI Visibility Audit checks 25+ signals and returns a score out of 100 in under 60 seconds.
If your score is below 60, your site is likely invisible to AI search tools handling maritime queries.
