The LinkedIn Profile That Gets Superyacht Captains Noticed
The superyacht industry runs on reputation and relationships. Most captains know this. What fewer realise is that reputation is now being built online before the first phone call happens.
Management companies check LinkedIn before they pick up the phone. Owners research captains before agreeing to a meeting. Charter brokers scan profiles before recommending someone to a client.
Your LinkedIn profile is your first impression. And for most maritime professionals, it is not doing enough work.
What a Weak Maritime LinkedIn Profile Looks Like
Headline: Captain | 500GT | MCA CoC
About section: a two-sentence summary with vessel types and years of experience.
Experience: company names, vessel names, dates.
Recommendations: zero.
This is a CV summary, not a professional profile. It tells a recruiter the minimum. It tells a management company nothing about why they should want to work with you.
What a Strong Maritime LinkedIn Profile Looks Like
Headline: Position you as a solution, not a job title.
“MCA Master Unlimited | Specialising in Owner Vessel Operations & New Build Delivery | 14 Years Superyacht”
About section: Three to five paragraphs. Your background, your operational speciality, what makes you different, and what you are looking for. Written in first person. Human. Specific.
Experience entries: Not just vessel name and flag. What you managed, what challenges you handled, what results you produced. The size of operation, the complexity of itinerary, the standards you maintained.
Skills and endorsements: SOLAS, ISM, MCA, flag state compliance, crew management. These are the keywords that search algorithms use to surface your profile to the right people.
Recommendations: Even one or two from owners, management company representatives, or chief officers you have worked with is transformative. Recommendations are proof.
The Fastest Way to Improve Your Profile
Start with the headline and About section. These two elements account for 80% of the first impression on your profile. If a management company or owner can read your headline and About and immediately understand your value, you have a working profile. Everything else is refinement.
The Maritime LinkedIn Profile Kit includes headline formulas, About section templates, experience entry frameworks, and a post library specifically written for maritime professionals. Available in the Signe Agency shop.
